KANGAROOS UNDER THREAT FROM 'INDUSTRY'
Thursrday 10 February, 2011
You may have seen news of kangaroos 'disrupting' a horse race at Hanging Rock on Australia Day. "They're so friendly with humans that they wanted to mingle." said a racing industry spokesman. Sadly the kangaroos' friendly nature and trust of humans is misplaced, as the Kangaroo Industry Association of Australia increases pressure for kangaroos to be commercially harvested in Victoria. KANGAROO KILLING FIELDS
Saturday 11 December, 2010
South Grampians Shire are hoping to turn
their tourist mecca into kangaroo killing fields. Unbelievably,
shooters are already allowed to kill kangaroos in this much
loved Victorian nature playground and now the Council wants
to expand this cruelty by turning the slaughter into an industry.
Cr. Paul Battista moved a motion to build a kangaroo meatworks
and approval is being sought from the Victorian Minister for
Agriculture.

Send an email
Please help save thousands of lives bywriting/emailing the Mayor of South Grampians Shire expressing
your disgust at their plans. Make sure you cc Cr Paul
Battista so he knows his motion is soaked in blood and not
acceptable. See ALV's letter
of complaint (below)

ALV's complaint to the Mayor
Dear Mayor Rentsch
Re: Proposed Kangaroo Meatworks
in the Grampians
Animal Liberation Victoria is appalled
that Cr Battista's motion to build a kangaroo meatworks in
Victoria's much loved natural wonderland, known for it's wildlife,
was accepted by your Council. We urgently appeal you to withdraw
your approval application from the Victorian Minister for
Agriculture.
Australian native wildlife in a natural
setting like the Grampians is one of the great joys of visiting
the region and is your main overseas tourist drawcard. We
are astounded you are putting this at risk and sickened that
you are harming and killing the natives who have lived there
peacefully for thousands of years.
A kangaroo meatworks will negatively
affect the reputation of the area. Can you envision souvenirs
in your numerous tourist shops with logos of the meatworks
showing the world's beloved kangaroos hanging upside down
from utes with their tails chopped off? Don't think
so! You would be aware of the Iki Island bloodbath in
Japan where the sea runs red from the brutal killing of dolphins.
This is attracting world condemnation and attention from the
Academy Award winning movie THE COVE. Your kangaroo
slaughter will be the next international bloodbath disgrace
that will embarrass Australia globally and much worse, cause
suffering and pain to the animals involved. Kangaroo shooting
is inherently cruel, breaks up family groups and leaves traumatised
joeys who escape to suffer a slow and painful death.
Why put your beautiful Grampians at the
forefront of such disgrace? We believe you may not have properly
considered the impact of your decision. Building a kangaroo
meatworks in the Grampians will turn tourists away and encourage
shooting even greater numbers of kangaroos by rewarding shooters
with financial rewards. It will also encourage the view that
wildlife is a commercial resource to be exploited at will
rather than sentient individuals who are trying to live their
own lives in their own home.
Word spreads quickly with social networking
and ALV will be alerting animal activists globally about this
obscene proposal and asking them to share the information
with their family and friends. Here's hoping you share
justice and show some compassion by leaving your hands off
the native inhabitants.
We look forward to your reply. Jo
