ANTI DAIRY DEMO AT RUN MELBOURNE

On June 28 Animal Liberation Victoria attended the annual Run Melbourne event to alert athletes and the general public about the widespread destruction caused by the dairy industry.

An event such as Run Melbourne should be all about promoting a healthy lifestyle - so it was disturbing to see Dairy Australia as one of the main sponsors of the event, playing the role of 'Education Partner'. ALV was there to provide some real education about how unhealthy dairy is and to make people aware of the widespread animal cruelty that goes into every drop of milk. There was alot of positive feedback about ALV's demo directly opposite the Dairy Australia tent. This included support from a number of vegan athletes who had just completed the marathon.

The ALV Dairy Destroys leaflets handed out on the day had a great impact. Made especially for Run Melbourne, this leaflet covers some of the basic facts about consuming dairy - including the links between dairy and obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis. As well as the fact that countries that drink the most milk have the worst bone health. (Photos below)

CHOICE MAGAZINE LETS DOWN READERS

Choice has published an article (September 2, 2009) stating that most "brands" of milk are pretty much the same despite the advertising on the cartons. What they fail to mention is that cows milk is for baby cows and not for people. The best form of calcium for humans actually comes from a plant based diet. It is true that all brands of milk have many things in common - they all involve tremendous cruelty to animals, serious health risks to humans and are extremely destructive to the environment.

The article from choice reads as follows:

SHOPPERS afraid of being milked at the supermarket checkout take note: according to a study on milk brands, products that boast added calcium and vitamins provide no significant health benefits compared with cheaper generic versions.

A study of more than 100 leading milk brands by consumer advocate Choice found that the only real difference was the fat content that divided full-cream, low-fat and skim milk.

It found milk products promoting extras such as calcium, vitamin D, A2 proteins, omega-3 fatty acids and those promising ''stronger bones'' offered no real benefit to most consumers and were often sold at a higher price.

Choice found generic home brands, often sold by supermarkets under their own labels (such sales have skyrocketed during the global financial crisis) are effectively the same quality as the bigger brands.

''Generic is just as good,'' said Choice spokesman Christopher Zinn.

''Effectively and taste-wise, it's much the same stuff.''

The study, released yesterday, found some milks containing omega-3 fats had such a small amount that a person would need to drink two litres of the product to get the same benefit from the fatty acids as eating a 50-gram piece of Atlantic salmon.

The real difference between milks was the fat content, according to the study.

The Food Standards Code defines regular milk as having a minimum of 3.2 grams of fat per 100 millilitres. Low-fat milk (often labelled ''light'') has no more than 1.5 grams of fat and skim milk contains no more than 0.15 grams.

''I think what's really interesting about this is that mother nature really got milk right,'' Mr Zinn said. ''You really don't need all the additives and extras, you just need milk.''
