Turning 30

ALV turned 30 years old on Sunday, December 7 and what better way to honour the day than saving lives. So ALV's openrescue team rescued six broiler breeder hens from miserable conditions shortly before their slaughter date.  We also took bags of chopped greens to the other hens and roosters who have been locked in the dim dusty shed near Melbourne for a solid year.

We have conducted several Openrescues at these sheds and are described in more detail in my blog,
See: Dads - There’s More Of Them Than We Think and Tears and Loyalty.

We can't let ourselves think - six hens - so what? considering there are over 200,000 birds on this one factory farm alone.   I think to myself, - well, the slaughterhouse didn't get these six!!  Words cannot describe the joy I feel for each one of these exhausted birds as I watch them now sunbathing.  There is a fresh breeze, warm sunshine, birds chirping in the trees above and these six hens look in total awe at everything around them, as if to say, "Where are we!! Is this for real?"

And if one person reading this 'sees' for the first time how wronged these intelligent birds are and stops eating them, more will be saved... and onwards we go. There's also the importance, never to be underestimated, of good people standing up and saying, NO, this is wrong and we are going to do civil disobedience to go inside these hellholes and rescue the sick and weary from their torment.  So how exciting was it to find out that only three days later on December 10 another group of animal activists in Spain did an openrescue saving the lives of 10 battery hens in their country.

ALV has carried out 10 openrescues and several investigations in 2008 saving hundreds of lives. A compilation will appear on this website soon with photos from all rescues.  Many thanks to the brave and committed animal activists who have been part of ALV's openrescue teams this year including, Anikee, Steph, Noah, Jamie, Erik, Dave, Tayah, Debra, Angie, Kerrie, Sharon, Laurens, Amanda, Patty, Jo, Skye, Michael, Judy, Simon, Sally, Tim, Jonathan...  and of course to all our supporters 'out there' who help fund the rescue work and vet bills, together in saving lives and changing a cruel world mindset.

Patty Mark,
Founder of ALV
