RSPCA Gala Ball - More Bloodshed
The RSPCA's annual $160 a head posh fundraiser is on again this Friday night September 29, with creatures great and small being killed for the event. ALV is planning a very solemn and dignified candlelight vigil outside the event in memory of all the animals who had to die for the Gala Ball. PLEASE ATTEND THIS VIGIL - Friday night, September 29, 6:30 pm (for 7:30 start of Ball) Grand Hyatt Melbourne 123 Collins Street. Dress: Black Tie (contact patty@alv.org.au for further information). ALV President Patty Mark wrote to the RSPCA asking them to make the event cruelty-free and not serve animals on the menu. She pointed out the RSPCA in the UK passed a resolution at their 2005 AGM to no longer put animals on the menu at RSPCA AGM's. There were 72 votes for the resolution and only 12 against. Eight members from the floor spoke in favour before the vote; none spoke in opposition, she asked RSPCA Victoria to follow this kindness. RSPCA Victoria replied to Patty that they would serve animals, as it was a matter of giving choice to their guests. click here to read Patty's letter and the RSPCA's reply.
Help Horses In Need!
Readers may have seen the story about the Tolmie starving horses on ABC Channel 2 News on Saturday September 2, or read about these horses in the Herald Sun on Wednesday August 30. Their plight is now the lead story on our website, so check out alv.org.au for full details. ALV have been working closely with local complainant Kay Sundborn since May to encourage the RSPCA to seize these horses before any more die. One very weak Clydesdale mare collapsed in front of rescue team members Patty Mark and Dave Bell on June 3 this year when they were investigating the case with A Current Affair film crew. A vet was called and the mare had to be put down. The footage was considered "too graphic" by Channel 9 to show on TV. Several horses have already died, and 20 still remain at risk. Please email the RSPCA at rspca@rspcavic.org.au asking that the remaining horses be seized and the owner prosecuted. [note: The RSPCA reply will state ALV is spreading misinformation about this issue and that Patty lied about the dates she took photos of the horses. ALV have filed an official complaint to the Ombudsman regarding RSPCA's handling of this matter and their false claims about ALV

Naked Caged Activist in Protest Against Animal Testing Conference
ALV members travelled up to Canberra earlier this month to take part in protests against the conferences of the two largest animal research groups in Australia (ANZSLAS and ANZCCART). The three days of protests included a 'welcome party' at the conference centre as the vivisectors arrived and a media event in which ALV activist Jamie Yew, with her face and body made up to look like an abused lab animal, shed her clothes and climbed into a cage, to symbolise the millions of animals who are experimented upon in Australia each year. The event was well attending by media and received great coverage on Channel 9 that night, as well as photos on the REUTERS, AP and AAP newswires. Please visit our website to read more about ALV's antivivisection campaign.
ALV Protests Japanese Dolphin Slaughter
On September 20, ALV activists joined with members of the Sea Shepherd to protest against the Japanese dolphin slaughter, in which 20,000 dolphins are killed each year. Ten people dressed up in white body suits and covered themselves in fake blood, to symbolise the suffering of the Japanese dolphins, while about 20 other demonstrators also handed out leaflets and gathered petition signatures, Some of our photos were picked up by the REUTERS newswire and have since been published in newspapers around the world. The demo also received a great AAP story. To send a protest letter to the Japanese government click here.
Killing us Softly
ALV President Patty Mark has an interview featured in the latest issue of SATYA MAGAZINE, published in the United States. The September issue is dedicated to a debate about the current and troubling trend of the global animal movement to endorse 'humane meat' or 'happy meat' as some call it. Patty's interview stressing the importance of abolition can be read online and a forum is available for comments. Animal Liberation Victoria is Australia's major abolitionist organisation and its work in this area, as well as openrescue, is respected worldwide.

Loving Homes Needed
(1) Brucie and his sister Little (pictured), were born to a mother who was dumped while she was pregnant with them. They are active, good natured Australian Terrier Cross who will be about small medium size. These little dogs have brought new life, laughter and joy to their temporary home. Seeking a genuine, committed home for life. Prefer not to separate as they are very close. Will not suit apartments or confined living. If you can help please ring Lynn on 9386 2536 or email: realanimals@westnet.com.au (2) Walter the cat is a 10 year old (we think) de- sexed black and white moggy who was abandoned and has been in temporary care since. He is very affectionate and wants nothing more than to just know there's a loving human in the room with him. He is very snuggly, a good eater, litter trained, and likes both indoors and out as long as there are people nearby. If you think you could provide a loving home for this dear little fellow please call Leigh on 0434 837 842
