World Murder Congress
In late April ALV protesters joined activists from around Australia to take part in protests against the 2006 World Meat Congress. On the first day ALV held a 'human meat tray' protest featuring an activist in an oversized meat tray, the purpose being to encourage people to make the connection between meat and the animals who go through lives of misery and terror at the slaughterhouse in the production of meat. The protest was a huge success with about twenty members of the media attending. The photos were picked up in newspapers globally, and seen by millions of people around the world (since the protest ALV has received numerous requests for vegetarian starter kits from countries as diverse as Thailand, India, Germany and many others). On the second day activists from Victoria, NSW and Queensland shut down a slaughterhouse for a few hours by locking down to the killing room (a full report will appear in the next issue of ACTION). All this time activists continued to keep up protests outside the congress itself, which received great coverage each night on the Queensland television stations (some of it going national). A sample of the newspaper coverage of the events can be read here and photos can be viewed here.
Million Paws Walk
ALV was present once again at this year's RSPCA Million Paws Walk, getting the message out that the only animal welfare group capable of prosecuting cruelty to animals is failing to help those under its care. On the day nearly one thousand showbags were handed out full of ALV information and details on how the RSPCA is letting the animals down (Cathy Freeman was amongst those receiving the showbags and having their eyes opened to the truth about the RSPCA). As well as handing out showbags, the 30 ALV volunteers there on the day, including lettuce ladies and bouncing bunnies, handed out free mock chicken nuggets to the hungry crowds, who were happy to sample an alternative to the dead animals being served up in the official RSPCA area.

The latest issue of ACTION is just back from the printers and comes packed with information on ALV's live export protests, the puppy farm campaign, duck rescue, member profiles, campaign updates and much more. ALV members will have received a copy in the mail recently. ALV Youth
ALV’s new youth group, ALV Youth, started in late 2005 and has since been busy on multiple expeditions, including animal rescues, tabling at concerts, interviewing bands and campaigning fearlessly for the rights of animals. ALV Youth will be tabling at upcoming events, creating new lines of merchandise such as t-shirts, hoodies and badges, and conducting interviews with various bands and band members who talk it up for animals (so far they have interviewed members of Goldfinger and Frenzal Rhomb). Check out the ALV youth myspace to see what's new: www.myspace.com/alvyouth. ALV youth can be contacted at alvyouth@alv.org.au.
